Arlene’s Art & Framing is
named after the artist Arlene Hodges.
Bertha Arlene Lamb grew up on a farm in eastern
South Dakota
. Arlene met her husband,
David Hodges when she first attended college at South Dakota
State
in Brookings South Dakota in the early 1960’s.
They were married and Arlene put her formal education plans on
hold and started a family.
While living in Russell MN, Arlene starting taking painting classes.
Dave and Arlene moved away from Russell in the mid 70’s, but
Arlene’s love for painting continued.
In 1982, the family moved back to Tyler MN.
During the next 10 years, Arlene painted and sold her work mostly
to family and friends. Her
love for flowers and gardening is evident as you note the subjects of
her painting. Arlene also
began teaching painting classes. Dave
supported Arlene in her painting. Dave
made most of the frames and plaques Arlene used in her art classes and
on the painting she sold.

Arlene returned to college in the early 1990’s and was a
full time student when Dave suddenly died in 1994.
Left with two sons still at home, and with the support of friends and
family, Arlene continued with her education and in 1996 she received her degree
in art. Formal education can’t
create talent where there is none, but the quality and variety of Arlene’s
work grew as she learned new skills and she grew more confident of the quality
of her work. As her seven children
moved to various parts of the
United States
, you can also see how subjects of her artwork changed.
You now see windmills from the prairies of
Nebraska
, mountain scenes from
Alaska
, lighthouses from
Michigan
, flower gardens and homestead scenes from
Eastern South Dakota. Arlene purchased a canvas transfer
business and started matting and framing prints and canvas transfers.
Arlene operated this business out of her home and called it Arlene’s
Art & Framing.
Arlene had prints and slides of her own original work
made and she began to market prints of her work to gift shops and galleries.
On July 4th, 2007, Arlene unexpectedly passed away.
As her children gathered to take care of her possessions, an idea was
born to re-establish Arlene’s Art and Framing in order to share the work she
had done. In February 2008, her
children created a corporation called Arlene’s Art & Framing.
Although Gerald Hodges operates the company, all of Dave and Arlene’s
children are part owners of this unique legacy.
